Police in Massachusetts accused a woman of skipping her own mother’s funeral so that she could enter the dead woman’s home and steal a safe while the rest of the family was occupied with the funeral ceremonies.
East Brookfield police say Alyce Davenport, 30, and Diron Conyers, 27, entered the home of Audra Johnson (Davenport’s mother) and allegedly stole a safe and other items reportedly worth up to $90,000, Fox News reported.
No one was at the Johnson home because the family was at the woman’s funeral.
Police were alerted that Davenport had been kicked out of her mother’s home because of the former’s drug habit and a manhunt for the couple was initiated. Davenport’s car was soon located, and police found the missing safe in the trunk.
Along with the safe, legal documents, $5,000 in collectible coins, jewelry, and other items taken from the Johnson home were reportedly found in Davenport’s car.
Police also found cocaine in a hotel room being rented by the suspects.
Davenport has a past history with police as she was reportedly a suspect in the theft of her father’s insurance payments after he died.
“Alyce also has a history of larceny, identity theft and forgery,” police told the Telegram & Gazette.
“Davenport was held on $15,000 bail,” Fox News reported. “Conyers, who has a criminal history that includes armed robbery, was held without bail due to another court warrant.”
